About the Jephson Hotel

The concept for The Jephson Hotel was launched in December of 2007, over a lunch and a few red wines at the Regatta Hotel, between friends, Ray Barber a renowned Brisbane architect and long time hotelier, Ray Shaw.  A gap in the Hotel market, within the local area of Toowong, was quickly identified and the strategy and concept developed for the construction of a full service 4/12 star Apartment Hotel in the Toowong precinct.

Within weeks following this initial lunch and early discussion, enquiries into vacant land within the chosen precinct was researched.  Land on the site of an old BP Service Station, on the corner of Jepshon Street was quickly acquired.  With design, concept and developmental approvals all in place, construction began and within just over two years, The Jephson Hotel was completed.

The precinct of Toowong and its surrounding suburbs is located just over 3 kilometres from Brisbane’s Central Business District.  It is a hub for local key corporate businesses located in Toowong Village Tower and surrounding areas, Toowong Shopping Village, several major Hospitals, and the University of Queensland.  Toowong offers an affluent mix of businesses, restaurants, medium density dwellings and detached housing drawing many local residents to this precinct for both work and social purposes.

The location of The Jephson Hotel to Public Transport ensures ease of accessibility for all guests and visitors alike.  Toowong Train Station is located just metres away from the Hotel, a two minute walk offers guests the ability to travel to key areas offering direct access to Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane’s CBD and access to the Air Train route, the most efficient and direct route to Brisbane Airport.  Just a short ten minute walk, gives guests direct access to the Toowong City Cat Terminal.   The City Cat service offers a network of stops from Bulimba to the University of Queensland at St Lucia.  A relaxing and enjoyable way of seeing Brisbane, the City Cat stops at key destinations including the University of Queensland, Southbank and the Brisbane CBD and corporate and shopping precinct.  The convenience of the location of The Jephson Hotel ensures guests do not experience the hassles and costs associated with securing parking in or near these highly visited and popular areas.

The Jephson Hotel offers complimentary car parking at the hotel for all guests, visitors and conference guests.  Conveniently located near the Western Freeway, the Hotel offers easy access linking Brisbane with the Western suburbs and access to the outlying areas of Ipswich, Toowoomba and beyond.

One of the earlier settled suburbs within Brisbane, Toowong offers two historic ‘watering holes’.   The Royal Exchange Hotel and the Regatta Hotel are both located just a short two minute walk from The Jephson Hotel.  The Regatta Hotel made its mark in history when a protest took place in 1965.  Two women (one of them, Merle Thornton - mother of Australian actress Sigrid Thornton) entered the hotel and ordered two beers and upon being refused service, chained themselves to the existing bar in protest of Public Bars then serving men only.  The police were called and bolt cutters were found.  The drinking laws, prohibiting women in public bars was not amended until some years later.

Times have certainly changed within Brisbane and The Jepson Hotel features J’s Lounge Bar and Restaurant, where women are most welcome!  Executive Chef Sian Bressoles showcases her passion for modern Australian cuisine, that has secured the Jephson Hotel's reputation for fine food.  Sian's a la carte menu focuses on the freshest of local Queensland produce by award winning suppliers, matched by a beverage list highlighting quality Australian, New Zealand and International Wines.

Boutique Beers lovers rejoice! - Bee's Nee's, Stone and Wood, Alhambra, Peroni, Fat Yak etc, all in bottles and not a post-mix gun in sight for those who enjoy the real deal.

J’s Lounge bar features an open air deck at the front of the hotel, allowing guests to enjoy a cool drink at the end of the day, al fresco style. J’s Restaurant seats up to 50 guests and offers a sleek but friendly dining experience.

The first and only fully service Hotel of its kind in the area, The Jephson Hotel offers a choice of accommodation options including premium Studio Rooms, Executive Suites through to spacious, well appointed one, two and three bedroom apartments.

Every room in The Jephson Hotel boasts a fully furnished balcony, tea/coffee making facilities, high speed broadband, FOXTEL, mini-bar, in-rooms safes, individually controlled reverse cycle air-conditioning and includes daily servicing.  For longer stays, the Studio Rooms and Apartments feature separate lounge and dining areas, single drawer dishwashers, twin hot plates, larger fridges, crockery and cutlery.

The Jephson Hotel also features a three bedroom, three bathroom Penthouse Suite, located on the top floor of the Hotel.  Overlooking Toowong’s High Street, the Penthouse takes up one complete end of the hotel floor and contains a fully equipped kitchen, separate lounge and dining areas, and four balconies…

Located on the top floor of the Hotel is the Conference Room and Roof Top Terrace BBQ area, offering views out over the Hills of Mt. Coo-tha.  This terrace area offers a unique conference and meeting venue and this space combined with the conference room is able to accommodate up to 80 people.  Both Conference areas offer flexibility and can be broken down into a boardroom and meeting room accommodating 16 delegates each or opened up and setup classroom, u-shape or boardroom style.  Free parking is a value added feature for all conference guests and delegates.

The recent floods in Queensland devastated Brisbane and directly affected many local suburbs and areas surrounding The Jephson Hotel.  Many local residents were left isolated due to localised flooding in the suburbs of St. Lucia, Milton and Auchflower.   As a testament to the structural development and design of the Hotel, The Jepson escaped any damage as a result of this flooding.  Unfortunately many local residents were not so lucky and The Jephson Hotel became a ‘home away from home’ for many who were seeking shelter and food.

Both Ray Barber and Ray Shaw worked closely and saw their initial concept and The Jephson Hotel ‘dream’ come to fruition when it opened on the 28th July 2010.  The end result was a hotel that was both functional and ergonomically designed and perfectly positioned to become the local ‘place to meet’ for residents, employees of local businesses and Hotel guests alike.

Quickly becoming an icon within the Toowong precinct, whether travelling for business or pleasure, or looking for a professional place to meet, a pleasant and unique dining experience or a quite drink, The Jephson Hotel looks forward to welcoming you soon.
